Senior Quantitative Data Analyst
Course Facilitator/Instructor
Under the School of Public Health and Department of Statistics, I have taught approximately 250 students in 5 courses since the 2019-2020 academic year. I have taught residential and online courses on biostatistics, R programming, global health, health insurance policy and health systems design/management. During my first term as a GSI, I implemented educational technology tools (e.g. Gradescope) in our instructional team to improve our team efficacy around grading and communication.
Data Scientist/Epidemiologist
I redeveloped many of the COVID-19 testing data pipelines that ingest data for the entirety of Los Angeles County. This was accomplished by automating daily ETL through custom unit tests, shell scripts and R, reducing daily processing time by 30% to meet press deadlines. I also designed 5 internal and public-facing dashboards to communicate KPIs, results and recommendations to technical and non-technical audiences using Boostrap 4, Sass, R Shiny and R Studio Connect. One of which included outlier/anomaly detection to detect irregularities in lab result submissions (e.g. frequency, volume) for 900 laboratories in LA County.
Data Consultant Intern
A short term internship (due to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic) with the Health Sciences division to assess and QA air modelling data for private and public organizations during remedial investigations. I utilized R and SQL to calculate and review our data to ensure it was in accordance with federal (EPA) and state regulations.
Assistant Instructional Designer (Online Master Of Public Health)
As the senior assistant in this department, I lead a team of 7 student assistants, overseen by the director and two career instructional designers, to grow a small Master of Public Health program with 1 concentration, 10 courses, and 70 students to one with 3 concentrations, over 30 courses, and nearly 200 students enrolled at any one term. I worked on developing content for several courses simultaneously, while still delivering high quality products, such that professors would request me for their courses. In addition to instructional design, I served as an operations analyst to redevelop our administrative workflows. I developed complex spreadsheets to manage our hiring and staffing needs for courses and to track our students through the program (prior to a robust Student Information System). I also implemented the use of Airtable in the instructional design team to improve project management and increase efficiency.
Public Health Commission Consultant
I served as the liaison to the Alameda County Public Health Commission. In addition to administrative logistics, such as meeting minutes, I interfaced with various people within the Alameda County Public Health Department and state representatives to facilitate the various projects the Commission took on. I reported to both the Public Health Director as well as the Chair and Vice Chair of the Commission.
Population Health Data Science Intern
Through Health Career Connection, a competitive health internship program, I worked with the Alameda Health System to develop a GIS and data dashboard to summarize the organization's progress in contracting with local organizations to stimulate the county's economy. My final deliverable was a presentation to leadership that summarized my findings and presented five recommendations for the near future. I sought out additional enrichment opportunities such as shadowing Epic Tapestry Direction Setting Meetings as the organization was transitioning to an Epic EHR.
Intern
Under Drs. Malcolm Potts and Nap Hosang, I conducted literature searches using scholarly databases on birth control in an effort to expand access in the United States.
Health Services Intern
As intern, I coached 10 risk high school students about secondary and post-secondary education. I later went on to be a teaching assistant for two years where I led discussions around various public health topics, including epidemiology, infectious disease, maternal and child health, and environmental health. In partnership with the Alameda County Public Health Department's Division of Communicable Disease Control and Prevention, I launched an internship program to expose undergraduate students to program logistics for Shoo the Flu, a inter-district collaboration for in-school influenza vaccinations. The Health Services Internship is a part of the Health Medical Apprenticeship Program, under Professors Malcolm Potts and Darlene Francis.
