One of the final modules of my Masters course is a group Client Based Project. As a team we were fortunate and privileged to be selected as Asset Skills Student Ambassadors. The module was split into three components including scoping report and presentation, a baseline report and presentation, concluding with a final written report for our client and associated presentation. The premise of our research was on mixed-tenure, temporary uses for a ex-storage building in the Greater Manchester area (details having to remain minimal due to confidentiality). We sought to use policy information, grey literature, UK-based case studies, and our own primary research to propose the most cost-effective and beneficial schemes for such a building.

Despite my university and part-time job commitments I began an 11-week placement at Barton Willmore, Manchester in January 2014. The experience provided me with an invaluable insight into a professional planning environment and through my part-time placement I had opportunities to attend meetings with clients, write planning appraisals, research background information (including local and national policy, market data, etc) and analyse data collected at public consultation meetings.The primary component of my placement was the construction of a 36-page land study detailing potential development sites in a borough of Greater Manchester. The document involved many stages including initial background/policy research, site visits, phone conversations with the council, writing the report and also my inclusion in discussions with major house builders once it was distributed as a piece of Barton Willmore literature.
