Thesis: Providing Basic Genetic Education to Paramedical/Health Professionals at Selected Indian Ophthalmic CentersThis pilot project involved the creation of an online training course that teaches the basics of human genetics, how to communicate relevant concepts to patients, and how to take a 3-generation pedigree. Study participants were hospital employees at ophthalmic clinics in India, where genetic services and genetic counselors are largely inaccessible. "Genetic education" (defined as explanation of genetic concepts and/or taking a pedigree) was implemented in 9 eye clinics and nearly 500 patients were provided this service. The project was of perceived benefit and no adverse events were reported. This is of public health significance as it safely created a clinical service that was not previously available.Principal Investigator: Ken K. Nischal, MD, FRCOphth
