In this role, I direct, plan, coordinate and organize responsibilities within the Rehabilitation and Custodial Alternatives Division. In addition, I provide leadership for programs and services within the jail system and with County-wide justice agencies, including alignment and coordination with reentry, development of strategies to implement restorative justice concepts, in-custody and out-of-custody services, education, vocational and reentry programs, and services with an emphasis on reducing recidivism.

Appointed by the Governor as Chief Data and Research Officer, I was tasked with developing, coordinating, and implementing research strategies that support the mission of OYCR. I played a highly collaborative role to oversee cross-functional data governance while simultaneously ensuring adoption and adherence to data quality. I also provided executive oversight, direction & authority to develop and implement initiatives that to promote and bolster best practices across the state of California in the area of juvenile justice and related reform efforts.

As Director, my role is to develop and implement applied research and evaluation projects that provide data to help inform policy, practice, and programming. I support over 130 projects that include anything from program evaluation, policy analysis, tool validation, developing fidelity tools, designing quality improvement methodologies, designing, and tracking performance metrics, supporting contract monitoring, and program fidelity. In this role, I also serve as a liaison for research, program, and community assessment activities with other Board of Supervisors, County departments, public and private agencies, and community groups and organizations.Some key project support includes:- Design and implementation of an AB372 California Intimate Partner Violence Pilot program- Design and implementation of SB823 Department of Juvenile Justice Realignment program- Trauma-informed walkthrough assessment of juvenile hall- Study high-needs women service and program delivery and outcomes - Redesign of juvenile ranch program- Serve on Probation Government Alliance on Race and Equity (GARE) Committee- Provide training and coaching on evidence-based practices.- Design and implementation of a new case management system- Developed department research protocols and data governance structure.- Strategic plan development- Staff workload studies and solutions development and implementation- Design and implementation of SB1004 deferred entry of judgment pilot program for young adults- Teaching statistics and research courses for County- Design and implementation of process to screen youth for risk of commercial sexual exploitation

When I started at Saginaw Valley State in January 2006, I was hired as a tenure track assistant professor and quickly became the Chair of the Criminal Justice Department. During my time there, I was key in the following department accomplishments: - revised the outdated criminal justice curriculum to make it more well-rounded and academically focused;- Increased the student body of the CJ department from ~250 to ~500 students- filled empty faculty positions with new and motivated faculty;- raised the profile of the department on campus; - revitalized the SVSU Criminal Justice Society and grew it into the largest and most recognized student organization on campus, with more than 120 members; and- generated student enthusiasm for the program – they were proud to be a member of the department. As a faculty member:- Very positive and spirited in classroom using humor, creative teaching approaches, and hard work to inspire students- Won the prestigious House Award for Teacher Impact in recognition of my classroom teaching accomplishments- Organized a large groups of students to participate in a field trip focused on human relations and diversity- ending with a talk by Gloria Steinem - Worked with another new faculty member in the English Department organized the New Faculty Learning Community, which brought junior faculty members in regular brown-bag lunches to discuss teaching concerns and promote a sense of community among new arrival- Highly involved in community and criminal justice-related activities in Saginaw and the surrounding Saginaw Bay area

One of the most challenging and interesting projects I worked on was to evaluate all the non-profits in the City of Detroit who applied for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). There were hundreds of sites to evaluate with varying degrees of implementation and program focus. When I came on board, the evaluation was fairly new and was only tracking outputs. During my time there, I worked with the core team to develop a new reporting format that included outcomes. I personally created and maintained an Access database (front/back end design) for my team to enter data and run reports. I supervised around 20 staff who entered data and/or conducted site visits. I read every report for content and grammar. This was a great opportunity to design an evaluation that fit many different resources and types of sites. As the evaluation progressed, I was able to conduct trainings for non-profits on evaluation with a focus on logic models, meriting outputs, activities, and outcomes, how to choose and implement assessments, and other related program measure topics.
