The primary focus of the work was to determine the absolute stereochemistry of a novel compound isolated from stiff goldenrod. (Prior NMR/HPLC-MS analysis yielded the structure of the compound, but the absolute stereochemistry of its glycosidic moieties was unknown.) • Derivitization of various standard monosaccharides of both D- and L- configuration was done utilizing a chiral alcohol and microwave synthesis technique. • GC-MS was used to determine retention times of both the D- and L- monosaccharide derivatives.• Absolute stereochemistry of glycosidic moieties was determined by comparison of retention times to those of the standards.Work with various disaccharides (of known linkage) was also done to determine if the microwave-assisted glycosylation method could be used to determine absolute configuration of substituted carbohydrates.
