About Holly Wagg, Cfre
Like most fundraisers, asking people to give to the charities that have touched their lives or causes that matter to them wasn’t an obvious career path. I’ve always worked in the non-profit sector. It’s where I first cut my chops in marketing, which then evolved to meshing communications with fundraising skills, and finally to exclusively focus on fundraising.For the past 22 years, I’ve worked for small and medium charities in the start-up or expansion phase – both in terms of the fundraising program or the organization itself. This means I’ve honed a skill set that is part strategist and part tactician, with the ability to lead from the front or the back of the room. From raising the first 5K for a brand new organization to generating millions of dollars annually for Canadian charities with household name recognition, my skills deliver outcomes that enable charities to meet their missions. Today, I’m a fundraising consultant with Good Works, an integrated fundraising and communications agency. We tell stories that build human connections between donors, causes and charities. Philanthropic Counsel

In 2004, I co-founded the Ten Oaks Project. At the time, there was no programming or services in Ottawa for kids with LGBTQ parents. For 5 years, I grew and led this tiny (yet mighty) organization as the President of the Board that delivered Camp Ten Oaks and Rainbow Families. At the time, I tackled everything from fundraising and camp staff training to governance and policy writing. I retired from the Board in 2009, and remained involved as an advisor and parent, In 2013, I came back in a volunteer capacity to help re-build the individual giving program.

I was hired at ArtsSmarts to support the organization’s transition from being a project fully funded by The J.W. McConnell Family Foundation to an autonomous charitable organization in its own right. In my first year, I established a funds development program which secured $515,020 in new funds. Over the next year, I fundraised $1.79M with a focus on diversifying the funding base and increasing the number of supporters from 4 to more than 45.
Senior Manager, Marketing And Communications
As the head of marketing and communications, I managed one direct report and provided leadership to several cross-functional project-based teams of up to ten staff. My focus was to create, execute and evaluate communications strategies and marketing plans for our five strategic service units (fitness, camps, child care, employment and housing) and organization-wide with a minimal budget. I designed and managed a wide-variety of collateral from integrated advertising campaigns and biannual program guides to the annual report and donor newsletters. I was also responsible for building the Y's web presence, and relationships with Ottawa-based media for media relations and advertising purposes.

This position was created for me after I finished a contract organizing the 5th Canadian HIV/AIDS Skills Building Symposium. I was responsible for managing and directing a five person staff team to provide fundraising, communications and marketing, member relations, IT and events (Walk for Life, World AIDS Day, PLWHIV/AIDS Forum and Annual General Meeting). During my tenure, I led the organization though re-branding strategy, which includes a new graphic identity, organizational voice, brochure, newsletter, standards and website.
