COTTON AND CROP GENETICSLaboratory and Field Responsibilities include:• Perform DNA and RNA extractions from various cotton tissues• Perform various PCR reactions, gel electrophoresis, gene sequencing and microsatellite analysis for gene sets from multiple studies. • Perform emasculation and cross-pollination procedures using different lines of cotton plants in the field in order to get a particular cross of interest • Harvest cotton boll samples from the field and subsequent ginning and de-linting of seeds collected from the bolls• Process, maintain and preserve seed stocks and plant tissue samples for future use• Maintain and inventory chemicals, fertilizers, supplies and equipment to ensure there is always enough supply for the laboratory, greenhouse and field work• Collect and summarize all experimental data in a laboratory notebook and/or computer software package• Measure twenty cotton fiber quality properties using an Advanced Fiber Information System (AFIS). The data collected would be used to select the genotypes with specific fiber properties of interest• Measure the seed surface area (SSA) of cotton seeds using a WinSeedle Image Analysis System• Perform daily safety inspections to ensure safety procedures are followed and there are no safety hazards in the facility
