A scientist with over 15 years of industrial experience in enzyme assays, strain/ host engineering, protein expression, and gene discovery in both bacterial systems (E.coli, Bacillus, cyanobacteria, and methanotrophs) and eukaryotic systems (algae and yeast/ fungal systems). Research areas include strain engineering/development, metabolic engineering, gene design, and gene discovery using genomic information, the most current molecular biology techniques, and biochemical methods. Expertise in enzymology with enzyme kinetics and assay development. A problem solver, creative, and adaptable; allowing achievement of results quickly. Successfully managed and mentored junior scientists at the bench. Proficient in coordinating and managing projects and effectively communicating in multidisciplinary teams.Specialties: biocatalysis, enzyme assays, molecular biology (PCR, error prone PCR, cloning, gDNA library construction, etc.), Western blotting, antisense RNA, RNAi, qRT-PCR, gene/promoter reporter assays, enzyme kinetics, analytical chemistry (HPLC, GC, MS, thin layer chromatograghy), FPLC (protein purification).Computer skills: Excel, Chemdraw, Unix, SQL, Vector NTI, Sequencher, CLC, and other bioinformatic tools (BLAST, NCBI, EcoCyc)

Senior Research Associate IiUniversity Of California San Diego Jan 2015 - Sep 2015La Jolla, Ca, UsDesigned "wetlab"experiments to confirm datasets of E.coli protein-protein interactions ( termed the "interactome") from yeast two hybrid experiments. I successfully identified several novel protein-protein interactions that were previously uncharacterized. https://www.nature.com/articles/nbt.4024 -

Scientist IiSynthetic Genomics Nov 2009 - Oct 2012La Jolla, Ca, Us•Created and validated novel lipogenic pathways in cyanobacteria species for enhanced biofuel productivity•Utilized gDNA libraries for identifying novel efflux pumps in E.coli using HTP colorimetric screens. • Led a gene validation research team characterizing metabolic pathways associated with neutral lipid accumulation in eukaryotic algal strains • Developed enzymatic assays for characterizing heterologously expressed enzymes in cyanobacteria and eukaryotic algae• Utilized RNAi /antisense RNA for knockdown of native competing metabolic pathways in eukaryotic algal strains. -
Scientist I- Molecular BiologistAgraquest Jun 2008 - Nov 2009• First hired Molecular Biologist established molecular biology platform tools for genetically manipulating industrial Bacillus strains• Designed in vitro anti-fungal synergy assays using natural products produced by Bacillus strains• Drove genome sequencing and analysis of several AgraQuest strains• Provided molecular biology support (i.e. training personnel)

Graduate StudentUniversity Of Minnesota Aug 2002 - Jul 2008Minneapolis And St. Paul, Minnesota, UsFor my PhD thesis, I characterized two acyl-transferases and an acyl-CoA synthetase from the hydrocarbon-degrading marine bacteria Marinobacter hydrocarbonoclasticus DSM 8798. I cloned several candidate acyltransferase genes as well as several acyl-CoA synthetases (acyl-CoA ligases) using Marinobacter aqualeoi VT8 genome sequence. The enzymes were characterized using in vitro coupling assays that generated acyl and isoprenoid wax ester products. -
Research Associate IiiThe Institute For Genomic Research Oct 1997 - Aug 2002Microbial Genomics Supervisor: Timothy Read, PhD• Assisted in the DNA sequence assembly of several microbial genomes (Streptococcus pneumoniae, Bacillus anthracis,Chlamydophila caviae, and Pseudomonas putida)• molecular biology techniques - cloning, PCR, dye terminator sequencing• bioinformatics and computational biology techniques (UNIX, SQL, PERL) to aide in the closure of these genomes.
