About Hon. Peter Reith

The Hon. Peter Reith is one of the most senior figures in the Liberal Party of Australia, being both a former Member of the Federal Parliament (1982-2001), a senior Cabinet Minister in the Howard Government (1996-2001) and later Director of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).Peter was a key figure in Australian politics throughout the 1990s promoting economic reform in taxation and labour market policies and played a major role in the implementation of the Howard Government's reform agenda after its election in 1996.Upon the Coalition winning government, Peter was appointed Minister for Industrial Relations and Leader of the House of Representatives, later taking up the position of Defence Minister. In the first 12 months of the Howard Government, he secured the implementation of the Coalition's industrial relations policy and also introduced into Parliament a new Bill providing for an overhaul of the Australian Public Service.After leaving politics Peter was a member for the Independent Tax Reform Commission in the United Kingdom and from 2003 to 2009 was a director of the EBRD.
