About Hooshang Heshmat, Phd

In November of 1994, Dr. Heshmat co-founded Mohawk Innovative Technology, Inc. (MiTi), an applied research and product development company dedicated to green technology, specializing in integration of mechanical components (e.g., bearings, seals, dampers and piston rings, including fluid film, dry lubricant and magnetic systems), into Turbomachinery, testing and measurement techniques and the design and fabrication of oil-free rotating machinery systems and component test equipment, who has established a premier biotechnology company in the Albany area based on their unique heart pump. He is a Leading-Founder and Technical Director of MiTi®, an applied research and product development company specializing in Oil-Free (green technology) Rotating Machineries since 1994.He has paved the way in the advancement of Oil-Free gas Foil Bearings, he is often regarded as the father of "The Quasi-Hydrodynamic Lubrication with Dry, Solid Triboparticulates,” one of the practical applications of his theory is the development of high-temp Tribological Coatings, Korolon®.He has directed well over 300 R&D and product development programs in the field of high speed turbo machineries and holds 28 patents, authored over 185 papers, 3 chapters for various Handbooks, and a book, Tribology of Interface Layers.He has received Numerous International Awards, naming few, the most prestigious ASME awards, “Thomas A.     As the Tech. Dir. my primary role has been in the development of foil bearings and am responsible for major advances in this field, including analytical and experimental research for bearing/seal design and application. Much of my work has been related to applying oil free foil bearings to high-speed turbomachinery, including advanced gas turbine engines, ACM for aircrafts, turbochargers, turboexpanders, cryocoolers, pumps, compressors, PM/IM motors and generators and refrigerant systems. I have been investigating the interaction of hybrid foil/magnetic bearing and developed computer codes to permit integrated hybrid bearing designs for advanced gas turbine engine applications.
