Work: I am a Professor in the Department of Language, Literature, & Cultural Studies at Maryland's first HBCU, Bowie State University. I have served as Department Chair, Recruitment & Retention Coordinator, and Language & Literature Coordinator. Academic Work & Grants: My work has been published in Comparative Drama, The Sixteenth-Century Journal, Early Modern Women, Women's Studies, Journal of Florida Literature, and Theatre Journal. I have received grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Japan-US Friendship Commission, the University of Texas-Austin, and the University System of Maryland.Creative Writing: My work has been published in The William & Mary Review, Saw Palm, Gulf Coast Magazine, Peregrine, Journal of Florida Studies, The Dallas Review, and O, Miami!Journalism: My work has been published in Forbes, The Washington Post, The Baltimore Sun, The Miami Herald, Forbes, The Hartford Courant, DCist, and Hispanic magazine.Higher Education Service: I am an Executive Committee Member of the South Atlantic Modern Language Association and Editor of the academic journal Mid-Atlantic Review. I have set scores for the College Board's AP English Language Exam. I have reviewed Title V grants for the U.S. Department of Education and theater grant applications for the NEH. I have also served as an External Reviewer for English Departments. I have given guest lectures at Columbia University, Florida International University, Villanova University, and Fresno City College.Politics and Volunteering: President Biden appointed me to the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities. I was President of the Cuban American Democrats, I was ANC Commissioner for Ward 5 in DC, I was State Committeeman for the Alachua County Democrats, I founded the Stonewall Democrats of Alachua County, and I was a Big Brother for Big Brothers/Big Sisters. I am Director of the Sierra Family Scholarship.I split my time between Miami and Washington, DC.
