Dr. Hu is Professor of Preventive Medicine (tenured; on sabbatical, July 1, 2024-June 30, 2025) in the Department of Population and Public Health Sciences at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California. From July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2024, he was the Flora L. Thornton Chair of the Department. He also remains an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. He is a physician-scientist, trained as an internist and preventive medicine specialist, with a doctoral degree in epidemiology from Harvard. Previously, he had been Professor of Environmental Health, Epidemiology, Global Health, and Internal Medicine and the Founding Dean of the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, a Faculty of the University of Toronto (2012-2018); the NSF International Chair of the Department of Environmental Health Sciences, Professor of Environmental Health, Epidemiology and Internal Medicine, Founding Director of the NIH/NIEHS Environmental Health Core Sciences Center, and Associate Physician at the University of Michigan and University of Michigan Health System (2006-2012); and Professor of Occupational & Environmental Medicine, Founding Director of the NIH/NIEHS Center for Children’s Environmental Health, Director of the Occupational Medicine Residency at the Harvard School of Public Health and Associate Physician in the Department of Medicine in the Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston (1988-2006).

Thornton Chair of the Department of Population and Public Health Sciences (formerly the Department of Preventive Medicine) beginning July 1, 2020. Since his arrival, the Department has embarked on an ambitious plan of faculty expansion, new initiatives (such as the creation of the COVID-19 Pandemic Research Center), and continued success, particularly in the areas of research on cancer, genetics, genomics and other "omics and health, tobacco and other addictions, the impacts of pollution and climate on health and health, social networks, data sciences for health, and health, human rights, and global health. -
On Sabbatical (From The University Of Toronto) & Affiliate Professor (University Of Washington)University Of Washington School Of Public Health Jul 2018 - Jun 2020Seattle, Wa, UsFrom July 2018 through June 2020, Dr. Hu was on sabbatical from the University of Toronto and assumed the position of Affiliate Professor at the University of Washington School of Public Health, where he co-created and co-led the Global Burden of Disease from Pollution and Climate Change Initiative while continuing his research as co-Principal Investigator of the NIH-funded Early Life Exposures in Mexico to Environmental Toxicants (ELEMENT) birth cohort project. -

As the Founding Dean, Dr. Hu led Canada’s best and largest School of Public Health , a Faculty within Canada’s best Global University . With the School’s leaders, he advanced a number of innovative initiatives involving healthy cities, big data for population health, the integration of the Institute for Health Policy Management and Evaluation as well as the Joint Centre for Bioethics into the School, the creation of the endowed Waakabiness-Bryce Institute for Indigenous health, the integration of population health into primary care, social entrepreneurship, and, with its partners around the world, the global agenda of addressing health inequities. In 2016, Dean Hu was elected to Fellowship in the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. From July 2017-June 2018, Dr. Hu was on a 1-year sabbatical/administrative leave as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Washington School of Public Health in Seattle. -
