Abatis Capital was a joint venture with Deutsche Bank. The objective of the joint venture was to create a $1B (USD) private equity fund focused on energy assets in North America. The investment thesis focused on combining investment banking skills with energy industry professionals to invest in assets with strong underlying cash flows that can be enhanced through asset optimization such as development, expansion, efficiency and capacity improvement, introducing alternative market participation strategies and repowering, Responsibilities included managing a team responsible for investment strategy, origination, market analysis, due diligence, revenue projections, generating asset financial pro forma’s, asset optimization enhancements, risk analysis, bid strategy and preparation. Corporate responsibilities included serving as a Board and Investment Committee member, supporting fund raising, activities, investor meetings and presentations. Additionally Abatis Capital provided advisory services to prospective investors in the energy sector. As result of federal legislation bank sponsorship restricting bank sponsorship of private equity funds the joint venture was dissolved.

AllCapital was the United States presence of AllCo Finance Group based in Sydney, Australia. Overall responsibility is managing energy infrastructure investments, primarily power generation, for fund placement. Responsibilities included market assessment, due diligence, developing financial pro forma’s, bid strategy and preparation, presentation to senior management, supporting equity and debt raising initiatives, purchase & sales agreement negotiations, and asset integration. Investment horizon includes power generation, electric transmission and distribution. AllCapital was successful in leading the Con Edison Development asset acquisition along with a JV partner. Assets comprised 1,700 megawatts of generation located in the Northeast acquired for $1.477 B (USD).

Overall responsibility for the development and execution of KeySpan’s long-term strategic asset plan. This involved the identification of gas and electric assets for acquisition and development that are aligned with corporate strategic growth and risk plan. Responsibilities included performing market assessments (short and long term) within our target regions from both a growth and regulatory standpoint. Existing Corporate assets were also evaluated for their role in our growth strategy and to determine how best to optimize them in the existing portfolio. This process involves, but was not limited to, valuing corporate assets for current and future markets, consideration for enhancing positions or divestitures. Responsibilities included leading negotiations of asset purchases and sales, off take contracts for development opportunities, due diligence, financial modeling and analysis, project management and overseeing joint venture partner relationships. Led acquisition and development teams for initiatives in electric generation and transmission, gas pipeline, storage and LNG throughout the Northeast. Managed unregulated assets such as KeySpan Production & Development, a natural gas production subsidiary located in West Virginia consisting of over 1,500 gathering wells, 10 MCF daily production and 46 BCF of proven reserves.

Overall responsibility for the development and execution of KeySpan’s Electric Generation growth strategy growing the fleet from 4,100 megawatts to 6,800 megawatts. This included both acquisition and green field development. Directly responsible for the management of $600 M overall project investments.Specific accomplishments during this period included:- Development, licensing, construction and financing of the Ravenswood 250 MW Gas Fired Combined Cycle facility. Commercial operation began in 2004. Overall project investment was $383M and was financed as a sale/lease back. This facility operates as a merchant facility in the wholesale NYC market.- Development and licensing of the Spagnoli Road Energy Center, a 250 MW Gas Fired Combined Cycle facility for future consideration to the Long Island Power Authority as a new source of capacity or to be utilized as a resource to support repowering of the existing generating assets on Long Island.- Development licensing, construction and tax exempt financing of the Glenwood and Port Jefferson Energy Centers. Each facility is an 80MW LM 6000 Peaking Facility and is under long term contract with the Long Island Power Authority. Projects investments were $200 M.

Overall responsibility for this segment of the business units earning management averaging approximately $250M in EBIT annually, asset management and operation of KeySpan’s 6,200 megawatts of fossil steam, gas turbine, and diesel generation located on Long Island and New York City. KeySpan was the largest owner/operator of generating assets in New York. In addition had responsibility for the maintenance and construction of substation facilities associated with the transmission and distribution system. Managed Power Engineering Department as a support unit to Generation Operations performing the majority in engineering support to our generating facilities with in-house professionals.Overall responsibility for the acquisition of the Ravenswood generating facility in 1999 as part of the Con Edison Generation divestiture. . Managed all due diligence activities, market valuations, bid preparation and submission. Negotiated final Purchase and Sales agreement and lead closing and transition effort. The transaction value was $597M and has exceeded all financial expectations for KeySpan.Managed numerous generating asset acquisition opportunities during this period.Managed the Power Supply Agreement (PSA), a long term Purchase Power Agreement with the Long Island Power Authority valued at $330.5 M revenue annually. This contract is for 4,100 mw’s of legacy generation formerly owned by the Long lsland Lighting Company. This included rate case preparation and testimony before the FERC. Throughout this period the business unit maximized contract profitability and operating incentives under the contract which focused on summer availability, maintaining maximum generating capability and thermal performance.Managed a business unit re-engineering initiative resulting in several key business changes. Productivity enhancements, reorganization and thermal performance improvements were key elements of this re-engineering initiative. .

Engineering Duty Officer

Responsible for the management of design, maintenance and construction of the electric transmission and distribution system, customer design services for Long Island. In addition had responsibility for manpower and crewing during the management of emergency and storm restoration. Managed $200M budget with a work force of 521 personnel.Significant achievements during this period were participation and management of transmission and distribution reliability improvement programs resulting in interruption frequency and restoration time improvement in some cases of over 100%.

Responsible for managing all major maintenance, repair activities and capital construction associated with the fossil steam power plants, gas turbines and electric substations. This was accomplished with a large in house mobile maintenance work force of 373 personnel.Managed a capital/expense budget of $55.0 M.

Responsible for the overall management, operation and maintenance of 1,440 megawatts of combustion turbine and diesel generator units.Managed a work force of 75 personnel. Recorded the all time high fired hours of operation for the Internal Combustion units accumulating 33,000 fired hours of operation in one season. Managed the startup of the Brookhaven Combustion Turbine Site.Implemented the first in house aircraft derivative overhaul facility in the company. Engines were completely disassembled on site and components went for repairs. Normally this work was performed by specialty contractors at extremely high costs. Quality and work scope was now controlled by Division personnel.

Responsible for the overall management and operation of a two unit 370 megawatt fossil steam generating facility. Managed an $11.0 M capital and maintenance budget and a workforce of 77 personnel. Achieved the longest continuous operation run for a steam generating facility in the company with Unit No. 2 operating for 336 days continuously without an outage.

Responsible for supervising the operation and maintenance of 1,440 megawatts of combustion turbine and diesel generation. Re-defined gas turbine overhaul philosophy and practices, hot section criteria. Developed new overhauls specifications, turbine protective coatings, component performance, and OEM recommendations. Developed in house work forces ability to perform modular in house overhauls for aircraft derivative gas turbines.Assisted in the design, specification, construction and start up of the 240 MW GE Frame 7EA Brookhaven Combustion Site.

Responsible for supervising all maintenance activities for a four unit 1,600 megawatt fossil steam generating facility, the largest generating facility on Long Island.Duties included managing the day to day maintenance activities as well as the major overhaul and major component modification activities.Developed the first Preventive Maintenance and Equipment History data base.

Duties over this 6 year period included supervising all maintenance activities and operations/controls activities associated with a 4 unit 470 megawatt fossil steam generating facility.Supervised the startup of the wastewater treatment facility.Assigned to the Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant as Operating Engineer during which period site personnel were preparing for NRC licensing examinations.

Generating Facility overhaul shift supervisor responsible for major, periodic and maintenance overhauls for steam turbines, generator, steam generators and balance of plant equipment. Managed major plant capital projects such as boiler retubing, header replacement, turbine upgrades, etc. Start up engineer Northport unit No. 4.

Assisted the plant maintenance engineer in managing the plants daily and major maintenance activities.Assisted the Plant Operations - Controls Engineer in maintaining the plant control systems including plant heat rate analysis, monitoring plant performance and making recommendations for improvement.
