About Howard Robinson

I am a clinical social worker who during 38 years of practice with children, youth, and adults developed a parallel career in Higher Education. I was fascinated with early child development and fortuitously got my start working in therapeutic nurseries with preschool children and their parents. I learned parent-child modalities from the very beginning and specialized in child treatment using expressive arts. Today, as a consultant to non-profit service organizations in Rwanda, I integrate my expertise in recovery from traumatic stress with community development through the promotion of early childhood education. I have learned through graduate humanitarian studies and in-country experience that psychosocial approaches anchored in the culture and assets of the community best promote family well-being and resilience. I now collaborate with non-profits in Rwanda such as TEACH Rwanda, Strive Foundation, and Imanzi Preschool and Kindergarten to promote socio-emotional learning within trauma-informed and child-centered learning environments. Collaborations are based on developing mutual trust and my ability to invite the voice of the most vulnerable to be heard and recognized. My mission is expressed in HR3: Human Recognition, Recovery, and Resilience. Skills: teach backward design for curriculum and organizational programming; teach logical frameworks for humanitarian disaster relief, recovery, and resilience; collaborate using collaborative community-based research and service; organizing communities of practitioners and community of learners, delivering large- and small-group development workshops, facilitate task groups, supervise mental health workers, engage with service providers in multi-disciplinary teams, integrate and apply theory and praxis, consulting with organizations and boards, providing trauma-informed consulting for community agencies, integrate knowledge and best practices related to traumatic stress in educational programs, adapt socio-emotional learning to local contexts, analyze situations from an ecosystemic and psychosocial perspective. engage in qualitative research to discover hidden voices and gain multiple perspectives, build team work skills, consult with intense work groups including performing arts ensembles to reconcile group tensions and develop small group identities. I am a content expertise in mental health, psychosocial wellness and resilience, trauma response and recovery.Personal: languages, music, and photography.
