As CTO for this global digital marketing outsourcer, Howard led a major transformation of both software development and Web design departments. This included (1) rolling out best practice web design and software development project management processes integrated Agile and user centered design approaches, (2) supporting teams with the deployment of new custom software and cloud-based tooling, (3) testing, recruiting, hiring, and firing resources, and (4) mentoring managers and technical specialists.The results included (1) a new Web design product portfolio and e-commerce delivery platform that significantly increased per unit profit, (2) a rebuild of core enterprise software using a modern Laravel/Bootstrap framework complete with API integration to cloud services, (3) deployment of Learning and Human Resource Management Systems, and (4) a significant increase in client satisfaction that produces an average net promoter score of 9 out of 10 on Web design projects. Additionally, as part of the executive management committee, Howard participates in a wide range of decisions, from HR policy, to financial management, to executive recruitment.

Advised IT executives at leading firms, spoke internationally at industry conferences, and was widely cited in the media including Forbes, IT World, and CNN Money.

McGill University’s Undersea Window project produced a teleoperated device to transmit live video from the ocean floor to scientists across Canada. As Lead User Interface (UI) Developer for the Undersea Window project, Howard implemented a user-centered design process that included site observation and interviews, collaborative evaluations, prototyping, remote usability testing, and UI coding in Java. The resulting UI was widely praised as intuitive and innovative. Howard also presented user-experience design lectures to McGill's engineering students, the International Society for Performance Improvement Conference, and the Usability Professionals' Association.

At Ericsson, Howard was responsible for all user interface (UI) development and technical publications to support the wireless Packet Core Network (PCN). He developed a multilingual web login system for public Wi-Fi networks. Modeled data flow, coded in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and facilitated collaborative evaluations for this multi-server application. He led a team to plan, write, and publish engineering documentation such as administrator guides, system impact studies, requirement specifications, and cost-benefit analyses, including an award-winning web-based help system (STC Online Help Award 2002).

Howard founded Kiewe Consulting to provide user experience and instructional design services to high-tech companies. Some notable projects included: (1) Icons, UI, and user documentation for an infrared-scanning device (won the STC Design Award 2000), (2) online training program for Johnson & Johnson that reduced training time by 15%, (3) digital cardiology training for Proctor & Gamble Pharmaceuticals, and (4) a web-based continuing medical education program for the University of Virginia School of Medicine.
