The General Medical Council (GMC) is the independent regulator for doctors in the UK. Our statutory purpose is to protect, promote and maintain the health and safety of the public by ensuring proper standards in the practice of medicine. We do that by controlling entry to the medical register and setting the standards for medical schools and postgraduate education and training. We also determine the principles and values that underpin good medical practice and we take firm but fair action where those standards have not been met.The Regional Liaison Service (RLS) works with our partners across England to make sure that the work of the GMC is understood and meets their needs, working with medical students, doctors, and patients and patient groups in Dorset, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Kent, Surrey, Sussex and the Channel Islands. To: • Help people to get involved in shaping our work through consultations and discuss changes that could affect them.• Develop relationships with key interest groups.• Promote the standards we set for doctors and explains what happens if a doctor falls short of these.• Support the implementation of revalidation by engaging groups of doctors and patients to make sure they understand what it is, how it will work and what it will mean for them.
