GreenBlu is commercializing a transformative way to extract magnesium from seawater or desalination brine using adsorption technology to crystallize and dehydrate salts from brine to produce anhydrous magnesium chloride used for electrolysis feedstock. This method requires no chemical inputs, only seawater and electricity. Our metal is fully decarbonized, requires no digging, generates no brine, has zero geopolitical risk, and has no limits to production. Just extracting the magnesium out of desalination brine we are currently producing would yield 100x current global production.Magnesium is as strong as aluminum but 75% lighter than steel, 50% lighter than titanium and 33% lighter than aluminum with strength comparable to aluminum. Each ton of decarbonized magnesium substituted for steel in a car, 67 tons of CO2 are avoided, and 28 tons from metal production. No other metal has such a strong 95 ton/ton leverage on carbon. Transportation is the largest sector for emissions at over 7 gigatons annually. Over a gigaton can be reduced through magnesium lightweighting. EVs are over a ton heavier than ICE cars due to battery weight. Reducing structural weight allows fewer batteries and smaller motors. Cheaper EVs and more per ton of lithium and other critical materials.
