I am a Ph.D. Student in Colonial Latin American History at the University of California: Los Angeles (UCLA). I focus on the social dynamics of indigenous communities, particularly those of the Valley of Oaxaca (Mixtecs and Zapotecs). Temporally, my interests lie in the sixteenth-century, but I strive to engage with the rest of the early modern and national/modern periods and scholarship, or long durée. Methodologically, I focus on microhistories with an ethnohistorical approach (social, culture, economic, and political). Hailing of indigenous heritage from the Valley of Oaxaca, I work with communities in Oaxaca and engage in public cultural and historical pride and awareness. Being born and raised in San Diego (Oaxa-California) on the border with Tijuana, Mexico, the transnational migrant experience also influences my perspective of the Atlantic context of colonial Mexico. For the year of 2024, I am also a UC Berkeley (Cal) History PhD Pipeline Fellow. I take pride being in the academy and am passionate about not only supporting but encouraging other students of first-gen, migrant, low-income backgrounds of diverse cultural backgrounds at all levels of higher education like my professors have done for me at MiraCosta Community College, CSU San Marcos, UC San Diego, San Diego State, and UCLA.
