Inspiring the world to be a light by reading books, giving books, and sharing books. City of Light was co-founded with the owner of Buffalo Heritage Press. Buffalo Heritage became an imprint under the new brand, as well as BHP’s children’s picture book imprint, Criss Cross AppleSauce, and the company’s adult nonfiction imprint, New Idea Press. We launched three new imprints to begin publishing children’s middle grade, young adult books, and adult fiction.Along with my responsibilities under the BHP positions, I became managing partner and directed the acquisition, creation, production, and marketing efforts for the entirety of the publishing house. My primary focus included the three children’s imprints (Criss Cross AppleSauce, Cross Your Fingers, and Cross Your Heart) and the adult fiction and nonfiction imprints (Blacklight Press and New Idea Press). My business partner primarily managed Buffalo Heritage Press and some editorial aspects of New Idea Press.

As a partner at the press, I worked in all areas. Though my title was director of marketing and publicity, I not only developed and implemented marketing plans for individual books and each of the three imprints, I also: curated and managed authors and illustrators; acted as a publicist to authors; managed production schedules; and edited manuscripts and fulfilled sales as needed.

The semester after I was news editor, I studied abroad at Charles University in Prague. I maintained my connection with the newspaper at Bonaventure by writer bi-weekly about my experiences abroad as the Czech correspondent.

As the news editor, I managed the news section and a team of writers, including two supporting editors. I identified stories for our weekly print publication and, in combination with my news assignment editor, assigned stories to the writers in our section. I lead the design of the section each week, teaching my news assignment editor InDesign and design principles along the way to prepare her to step into the news editor role the next semester. As the news editor, I also wrote at least one story for each issue, but I often wrote more than one.

During my time as a correspondent, I had the most cover stories recorded from any correspondent. I wrote stories about a variety of topics, ranging from music reviews to holiday features to pieces about local entrepreneurs and businesses and more. Assignments were given but I also pitched a great deal of my own stories.
