Demographics & Data Project - The Penn Refugee Clinic serves newly resettled refugees by providing required health screening and immunizations and address any other healthcare needs for refugee patients. In collaboration with the Chief Resident I am working on the collection and analysis of data regarding demographics and prevalence of disease of refugees seen at the Penn Refugee Clinic. We are analyzing patient data to evaluate clinic performance. Our goal of is to improve subsequent screening practices based on our understanding of disease prevalence in our patient population and implement programs to address identified gaps in care.Refugee Transitions Project - Helped establish and implement a protocol to ensure the smooth and successful transition of refugee patients to a primary care provider following the completion of post-arrival medical screening at the Penn Refugee Clinic. This was achieved by training Service Link volunteers to provide both health systems education and referral to health-related resources, primarily using translator services. Volunteers also provide phone-based follow-up to patients after visits to the clinic, connection to relevant community based organizations, and referral to Benefits Data Trust to coordinate social benefits.

CHOP's Homeless Health Initiative (HHI) provides free health services to women and children living in local emergency housing shelters. Volunteers from multiple medical disciplines offer high-quality medical and dental care, and health education to shelter residents in the Philadelphia area. As the medical student leader I recruited, oriented, and managed medical student volunteers for the clinic, which was held once a week at one of three homeless shelters in West Philadelphia. I also attended monthly meetings with other initiative stakeholders including shelter leaders, social workers, and residents.

Volunteer Research Assistant with the Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) of the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation at the University of Cape Town. The DTHF CTU’s research focus is on HIV treatment and vaccine studies, as well as prevention studies. As a research assistant I was a part of the CTU’s dynamic team, supporting physicians, study coordinators, HIV counsellors, pharmacists, lab technicians and other office staff in their work. This meant that my roles and responsibilities were varied and included tasks such as: reviewing patient files, assisting with lab specimen archiving, informed consent, training counselors on basic PC skills, reviewing and improving SOPs, shadowing physicians & conducting physical exams, chart review to update the TB database, monitoring and evaluating adherence to ethics, etc. The patient population I worked with included HIV-1 infected virologically suppressed adolescents, HIV infected adults, non-infected men who have sex with men, and non-infected adolescent women. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work/shadow in multiple of the organization’s clinics in the CBD and the townships, which allowed me to see the different stages of clinical research, from recruitment to implementation to compassionate care. Specifically, while I was there they were just starting the VRC01 Antibody Mediated Prevention Study (AMP Trial) in non-HIV infected adolescent women and I had the opportunity to work on many different aspects of this trial, which I found particularly fascinating.

As a co-founder of SEEED@Brown, a student group focused on building the social innovation community in Providence, I worked with the Social Enterprise Greenhouse, the Swearer Center and A Better World By Design to organize a two-day summit that convened over 475 academics, business leaders, policymakers, artists, and students to discuss the emerging field of social innovation. I managed a 15 person team, oversaw logistics, participated in workshop development and speaker recruitment, and built community and regional partnerships with social enterprises and non-profits.
