The Mandarin course is taught in a structured and systematic fashion. The lessons are designed to engage students in the learning of practical and authentic language that they can use in the real world. Lessons focus on the Chinese Pinyin Romanization system: tones, rules of phonetic spelling and pronunciation drills, Chinese characters (both simplified and traditional), stroke order, and structure calligraphic techniques. Through basic texts and a variety of supplemental reading and listening materials; writing and speaking tasks and projects, students learn to communicate effectively and accurately in a wide range of situations. Chinese history and culture are introduced as it relates to each lesson. In addition, this course will cover computer skills not only with a Chinese program, but as a means for using computer as a learning technique. Moreover, students will be expected to spend time outside of class to gain the real-life experience necessary by interviewing native speakers as well as visiting Chinese related institutions. They are shown a variety of carefully selected videos and film on Chinese life and culture. Students are also assigned projects to present in class.
