Dr. Hsiao-Dong Chiang’s research efforts are predominantly focused on nonlinear theory, computation and applications to electric circuits, systems, signals, and images. He developed BCU methodology for power system online dynamic security assessments. BCU methodology has been recognized as the most powerful direct method in the field. Dr. Chiang has also developed a new global optimal technology called Trust-Tech methodology. Trust-Tech methodology is a powerful tool for solving general nonlinear continuous, discrete, and mixed integer programming problems. Trust-Tech methodology has achieved several practical applications. Dr. Chiang also works on the development of computational methods for nonlinear analysis and control of large-scale systems. Over several years, Dr. Chiang and his team collectively developed a practical package, call SecureSuite (tm), for power grid security assessment, enhancement, and applications. The SecureSuite, currently applicable to 50,000-bus power systems, includes TEPCO-BCU, BCU-DSA, VSA&E, CPFLOW, ECLIPSE, and security-constrained packages available for transfer analysis and enhancement. BCU-DSA is currently a field-proven package around the world for online dynamic security assessment. It has been installed at several major utilities. VSA&E is an integrated package developed for voltage security assessment, enhancement, and preventive control in real-time or online study modes. VSA&E has been operational in the top two utilities in the USA.Dr. Chiang has managed and executed over 50 industry or government-sponsored projects during the last 12 years. Dr. Chiang and his group have developed more than 10 computer packages for utility and industrial applications with more than 30 industrial users.
