Dr HSU Li Yang is an infectious diseases physician who is currently an academic at the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health (SSHSPH), National University of Singapore (NUS). His research interests are in the area of antimicrobial resistance, global health and health security. His current work involves furthering the regional reach of SSHSPH, promoting and organizing collaborations between SSHSPH and regional university schools as well as government agencies. He also leads the Asia Centre for Health Security, an academic think-tank funded by philanthropy with the vision of an Asia prepared for current and emerging biological threats and working together towards improving health securityDr Hsu is keen on public education on infectious diseases, having written numerous commentaries on various infectious diseases in Singapore’s mainstream media in addition to lectures and other teaching. He has worked with award-winning graphic novelist Mr Sonny Liew to develop easy-to-understand comics and books on the issues of antimicrobial resistance, vaccines and COVID-19. He is also interested in the history of infectious diseases in Singapore, having published three books - two with bona fide academic historian Dr LOH Kah Seng on tuberculosis and major outbreaks/pandemics in Singapore, and also produced a video on this as part of the SG50 celebrations in 2015. In his past life, Dr Hsu was an avid chess player. He is currently President of the Singapore Chess Federation.
