Advanced Lead Engineer - Combustion

Cincinnati, Ohio, United States

Andrew works to adapt and redesign aeroderivative engines to operate with hydrogen fuel. His work include modeling and testing at GE Facilities, and working with GE Vernova to ensure a viable and robust end-product. Andrew manages an adaptation program for a specific engine, designs and plans testing, and analyzes/reports the data and results to stakeholders.

Postdoctoral Research Associate

Ithaca, New York, United States

Andrew studied the feasibility of utilizing demonstration-scale pyrolysis to generate biochar on NY dairy farms from cow manure in order to recycle precious nutrients, mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, and reduce waste transport. As part of this work, Andrew designed (CAD) and prototyped a nutrient recovery system to enable phosphorus and nitrogen recovery and deposition onto individual carbonaceous biochars. Additionally, this process helps sequester carbon into soils when land applied, and reduces ammonia and nitrous oxide emissions. Andrew has an extensive background in pyrolysis and thermochemical conversion technologies and regularly generates and modifies material composition and equipment to produce unique and specialized carbonaceous materials. Andrew has conducted performance and life-cycle assessments on prototypes to determine feasibility of wide-spread implementation on dairy farms and municipal treatment plants, and has explored the use of human-derived feedstocks to reduce demand on waste treatment plants, and generate standalone systems.

Aug 2022 - Mar 2023

Doctoral Student

Ithaca, Ny

At Cornell, Andrew worked under both Engineering and Agricultural Sciences disciplines to improve the quality of liquid bio-oils and biofuels derived from agricultural waste. To accomplish this, Andrew built and tested unique high-temperature reactors for thermochemical conversion including and data acquisition. Andrew examined individual biopolymers (cellulose, hemicelluloses, lignin, etc.) and representative feedstocks (stone fruit pits, rice husks, corn stover, etc.) undergoing thermochemical conversion (pyrolysis) and identified key metrics in the behavior of decomposition pathways. He used this knowledge to generate feedstock-catalyst blends which reduced the quantity of viscous and acidic tar compounds in the bio-oil by leveraging type, quantity, and location of catalyst to optimize the process. As part of this work Andrew operated and maintained a suite of laboratory equipment including GCMS, TGA, ICMPS, and HPLC. Additionally, Andrew mentored early-career graduate students and undergraduates. Provided direction for research topics, planning, and execution; assisted with experimental setup, data analysis, and modeling. He authored peer-reviewed scientific papers, presented live, virtual, and pre-recorded at conferences across the country to share and distribute scientific findings.

Aug 2018 - May 2022

Project Engineer

North Andover, Ma

At Energy and Resource Solutions, Andrew worked with the states of Maine and Massachusetts to help implement energy efficiency measures in commercial, industrial, and residential buildings. As part of this work, Andrew conducted site surveys, gathered data on energy use, and verified the installation of equipment as planned. Andrew performed energy analyses on systems such as lighting design, combined heat and power installation, and district heating/cooling systems.

Aug 2017 - Jun 2018

Process Engineer

Waste Enterprisers Holding/Pivot Ltd

Kigali, Rwanda

At Pivot Works, Andrew took a lead role in the construction, operation, and optimization of a waste-to-energy pilot plant in Kigali, Rwanda. He was instrumental in helping the plant achieve it’s two major goals: to produce 1,000 dry kg/day of solid biofuel, and to produce the biofuel at less than $100/tonne. To accomplish these goals Andrew modified task-specific high-temperature rotary kilns to improve yields, developed novel sludge-bed mixing devices to enhance evaporation, and developed Standard Operating Procedures for the team of four operators he managed. Additionally, Andrew met with customers to help retrofit their equipment to use the biofuel directly or blended with other fuel sources, and helped develop quality control factors including size/form factor, moisture content, and energy density. Andrew’s responsibilities covered greenhouse drying, thermal drying, material movement and storage, and customer end-use. He was involved with the project from early construction through the commissioning, production, and demonstration phases. Andrew trained and managed a group of four operators to enable production over two shifts.

Jun 2015 - Jun 2017

Data Analyst (Co-Op)

Boston, Massachusetts

At Independence Solar, Andrew analyzed and conducted feasibility studies for the development of new commercial solar installations including system sizing, panel tilt, efficient rooftop layout, expected energy per month, best wiring practices, combiner box placement, roof loading and distribution, and snow removal. Andrew monitored operations and management of existing solar arrays and standardized maintenance practices, retrofitting of new communication hardware, and modbus mapping. He conducted statistical analysis on historic data, and conducted site inspections and diagnoses for low-producing arrays. Andrew troubleshot production issues with third-party monitoring software tech support, inverter manufacturer support and clients simultaneously. Additionally, Andrew automated array monitoring with third-party software to reduce man-hours needed and to ensure immediate notification of potential issues.

Jun 2014 - Sep 2014

Resource Specialist

In the Peace Corps, Andrew provided direct classroom instruction in Mathematics, Natural Science, and English to grades 6-9. He developed classroom management systems, created and maintained a portfolio of lesson plans for future use, and submitted classroom progress reports to both the school and provincial department of education. Apart from teaching, Andrew took on several side-projects. He received a grant for $5,000 to teach basic courses on woodworking to high school students and during the lessons, he built furniture for the local community Center for Orphans and Vulnerable Children. Projects included tables, chairs, desks, shelves, cabinets, countertops, and sinks (with grey-water drainage). Additionally, Andrew partnered with Roundabout Water Solutions to rehabilitate a disused borehole to provide clean drinking water to the school.
