Responsible for managing SMBC’s relationships with Latin American Financial Institutions, including Commercial Banks, Central Banks and Sovereign Wealth Funds. Delivering SMBC’s business platform by working in partnership with product units of the bank (trade finance, DCM, LCM, Treasury, Capital Markets, Transaction Banking and others). Represent SMBC at the Annual Assemblies of Multilateral Institutions such as the IMF & IDB, and also at Felaban. Secured US$ 7bn in funding from 15+ central banks, and US$ 4bn from large export oriented companies (i.e. oil & gas, mining, pulp & paper etc) as deposits placed at SMBC, New York Branch.Working on an initiative aimed at raising MXN peso funding from local investors (public and private sector pension funds, banks, insurance companies and corporate customers) to support the growth of the bank’s Mexican peso loan portfolio.

Banker responsible for cross border business with large corporates. Secured multiple lead arranger roles as bookrunner in credit facilities with top names in mining, power, oil & gas (i.e. Vale, CFE, Pemex, PMI, Usiminas, etc.) and some with financial institutions. Secured these lead arranger mandates working alongside local teams in Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Peru and supervised a team of analysts in New York responsible for credit analysis and portfolio management (credit application, KYC & customer on-boarding and periodic reviews).Member of SMBC's liability management committee responsible for managing relationships with Latin American investors in the region (central banks, commercial banks, corporations and funds).Also employed by SMBC Nikko Securities (the bank’s broker/dealer) under a dual-hat program for the marketing of securities business.

Recruited to develop and significantly expand SMBC’s business with financial institutions, sovereigns and major corporations in Latin America. Within first-five years grew a small and predominantly Brazil focused Latin American corporate business with less than 15 customers into a larger regional platform with a customer base of 40+ names, facilitating the subsequent opening of representative offices in Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Chile. Structured credit facilities for corporates secured with export receivables or risks mitigated with Export Credit Agencies, and for large banks secured with DPRs (diversified payment rights).Established strong business relationships with Latin American investors mainly central banks, commercial banks and large export oriented companies. Raised over US$3 bn in deposits, enabling the partial funding of the Latin American loan portfolio.Led the workout of troubled credit accounts (Mexico & Brazil) during the 2008/2009 financial crisis. Achieved full recovery.

Asked by senior management to join HVB New York to develop the bank’s corporate & FI business in Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Chile and Bolivia. Served as Global Relationship Manager for all customers in these countries.Produced a business strategy focused on selected target names and undertook frequent marketing trips to the region. Originated business tied mainly to trade finance and European ECA financing, the bank’s product expertise.Built a sizable loan portfolio with top corporate names in Chile, Venezuela, Colombia and Peru in diverse industries such as oil & gas, mining, steel, food, breweries, utilities and pulp and paper. Most of these deals were structured with ECA cover, with multilateral agency risk mitigation (CAF, CABEI, IDB & IFC), or secured with export receivables. Led the workout and successful recovery of troubled accounts in Peru.

Recruited to join as deputy representative when HVB opened its Rep. Office in Mexico. Charged with originating business with financial institutions and corporates in Mexico & Central America. Joint responsibility for managing a representative office with a staff of eight people.In the aftermath of the 1995 “tequila crisis” (the Mexican peso devaluation), focused HVB’s business origination strategy on large, capital-intensive export oriented companies in Mexico City and Monterrey. Developed long-term relationships with top names and built a US$1 bn + loan portfolio in syndicated loans, club deals, bilateral loans and structured loans (ECA loans with Hermes & SACE cover). Developed a sizable trade finance loan portfolio with Mexican banks.

Joined the ECA financing department responsible for negotiating and managing ECA covered credit lines with European and American banks for the long-term financing of capital goods. Promoted within one year to head the ECA financing department and manage a team of four.Conducted training seminars on ECA financing for account officers in selected cities throughout the country. Team member responsible for the negotiation and structuring of the first USCP program in Mexico.
