About Hugh Hayes, Ph.D.
I have been a Research Chemist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology since 2018 where I focus on developing analytical methods and Standard Reference Materials for botanical and vitamin-based dietary supplementation. I also co-lead the Dietary Supplement Laboratory Quality Assurance Program (DSQAP) which supports the measurement needs within the dietary supplement communities through interlaboratory comparison studies. My investigative analytical research experience includes method development and validation for the separation, identification, and certification of targeted compounds in raw and finished dietary supplementation/food ingredient reference materials, determination of trace carcinogenic and mutagenic compounds in complex environmental matrices, and the forensic analysis of textile fibers with environmental exposure. I have extensive experience with advanced method development focusing on highly technical instrumentation such as normal- and reversed-phase liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC-MS), tandem mass spectrometry (MS & MS-MS), and photoluminescence spectroscopy (FLD & UV/Vis).I'm an enthusiastic scientist with 10+ years of experience in scientific writing and research, from planning to execution of projects through delivery of internal technical reports to final peer-reviewed publications and communications at prestigious international meetings.I received my Ph.D. in Chemistry focusing on Analytical Chemistry and Forensic Science from the University of Central Florida (UCF) in 2018. I also earned a Master of Science degree in Chemistry from UCF (2015) as well as a Master of Science degree in Forensic Science from Stevenson University (2013). I earned my B.S. in Chemistry from Stevenson University in 2012.
