Hugh Hynes is a cofounder of PROTOinc, an architecture and planning practice based in San Francisco that has completed a wide variety of commercial, industrial and institutional projects throughout United States. Our clients are pioneers in the infrastructure, energy, agriculture and automotive sectors, with a shared passion for the intersection of art and industry. In recent years, Hugh's work has focused on mobility, seeking a better understanding of how we move affects where we live, work and play. In the waning years of the internal combustion engine, how might the relationships between new technologies of transportation and the built environment be transformed? Combining a “heads-up” expertise in economic modeling, strategic/logistical planning, and systems management at the large scale, with a “hands-on” aptitude for materials research, prototyping and innovation at the small scale, PROTOinc's work pushes the ambitions of otherwise generic facilities design and a re-defined “architectural hardware.”Hugh received his Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University, and Master of Architecture from Columbia University. His ongoing teaching and research at CCA focuses on the evolving relationship between industrialization and architecture, including emerging tactics for architectural entrepreneurship, practices of systems-thinking in design, histories of mass-scale production, and proliferation of late-industrial landscapes. In past years he has led the Volatility Research Group, which pursued research into adaptive architectural prototypes, scenario planning, and catastrophe/ contingency tactics for the built environment.
