Since joining Taylor Fry in 2006 Hugh has built a reputation as a reliable and thoughtful actuary working across a wide range of actuarial and analytics projects. He now focuses mainly on the social sector, using data to improve policy.Hugh loves projects at the cutting edge of actuarial science where he can make use of his expertise in statistics to propose and implement new solutions to problems. As part of the team performing annual modelling of the New Zealand welfare system, Hugh helped provide government a long-term view to understand disadvantage and the effects of reforms over time.Hugh is an active and respected researcher whose awards include the 2011 University of Melbourne’s Chancellor’s Award for his PhD thesis on Statistical Methods for the analysis of high-dimensional data. He also shared the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries Brian Hey prize 2018 for a paper on self-assembling claim reserving models.He is a regular speaker on data analytics and the issues facing business, government and society.
