Hugh Montgomery is a Independent Consultant at Self-employed. He possess expertise in stewardship, nonprofits, planned giving, annual giving, philanthropy and 14 more skills. He is proficient in French. Colleagues describe him as "Hugh is a man of extraordinary kindness and regularly extended that to me and my family. He was often the first to pitch in when we needed help - say moving in the middle of a blizzard. Hugh knows the ins and outs of Planned giving and I always looked forward to hearing him speak about it and he is very skilled at presenting material to a multitude of audiences. Hugh values the work of technical fundraisers. He worked closely with Raiser's Edge since the DOS days and has a deep understanding of what the database view can and can't do. When something was asked of me and it wasn't in the best interest of our data integrity Hugh gave me a voice to disagree." and "I worked closely with Hugh from 1987 to 1995. I recommend him enthusiastically; he can provide thoughtful experience and wisdom to any group wishing to strengthen its fundraising program. A long-term teacher at Putney, I became the head of school in 1990. We soon embarked on our first significant capital campaign together. Hugh \ planned and guided the work, and infused the school with a new culture of giving. We had to raise millions in short order to meet challenge grants and surpass an ambitious goal. This effort demanded a strong sense of the school's values and history, and an understanding of how to manage the head of school and board members. Hugh had a deft touch. He also guided an enthusiastic, but not especially experienced staff in the fledgling development office. Decades worth of Information had to be entered into a new database, staff had to be hired, and annual giving had to grow quickly at the same time. Hugh provided the leadership to make all these things happen, professionalized our development operation and laid a foundation that has served Putney well. Part of Hugh’s genius was keeping my spirits high while we were doing development work and I was “distracted” by the many competing facets of running a boarding school. Fundraising became an important focus; it was also much more pleasurable than I would have imagined as, together, we made a case for support and strengthened the bonds with our constituents. They, in turn, increased their commitments. Often we hit the road together. Hugh had the expeditions well planned, providing essential information about the people we were visiting and coaching me through each upcoming conversation. He positioned me for success and was always ready with details about topics of interest to the people we met, including how the campaign was progressing and what we still wanted to accomplish, with their help, of course. He deserves a great deal of credit for the campaign. meeting the challenges with aplomb and celebrating successes by giving credit to others. I left the school in 1995. Hugh stayed until 1998 before setting off on another tack (in conservation and youth development fundraising). He returned to Putney more than a decade later and served an additional eight years as director of development. Throughout we have stayed in close touch. In my capacity as trustee and former president of a mid-sized foundation I have come to appreciate the many ways Hugh brought experience and commitment to his own work while helping others confront challenges and seize opportunities. I have tremendous respect for Hugh’s expertise, his creativity, his work ethic, his gift with words and positive spirit no matter how hard things sometimes seemed. I can personally vouch for his success providing experience and professional insight to organizations committed to raising more money and strengthening a productive philanthropic culture grounded in institutional mission and values. Director Of DevelopmentThe Putney School Oct 2013 - Dec 2021This was the second hitch I served in this role and a pivotal time in the school's forward momentum. We grew the endowment to about $35 million and consistently topped the $1.2 million mark in the Annual Fund. In addition we normalized ongoing discussion of legacy giving, building the future with testamentary support. Putney will always have a soft spot in my heart, and both my daughters graduated from this usual place in the Vermont hills. -
Director Of Gift PlanningStudent Conservation Association Oct 1998 - Oct 2013Charlestown, NhI quickly moved from a major gift officer role to establishing a planned giving program that sparked more than 150 gift annuities and a number of 7-figure legacy commitments. SCA is a simple and elegant idea dreamed up by a college undergraduate in the 1950s that has now engaged more than 100,000 conservation volunteers and many thousands of donors. -
PresidentPlanned Giving Group Of New England Jun 2009 - May 2010New England (Boston)PGGNE is a remarkable institution, the oldest and largest of its kind in the U.S. It was a great pleasure to serve on the board for five years, the last of which as its president (a one-year term). I continue to stay connected and have made some of my most cherished colleagues and friends through PGGNE.

Director Of Development & Alumni AffairsThe Putney School Oct 1987 - Jun 1998This was a marvelous and challenging experience, taking a leadership role in hauling a quirky and wonderful place back from the financial abyss, launching the first significant fund-raising effort, building a professional development team from scratch, modernizing a board of trustees, installing a digital database, and so much more. I also learned to drive a school bus and lead high school students on wilderness trips.
