I had the opportunity work in the Medical Emergency department of Baragwanath Hospital in Johannesburg for my medical elective.Here I worked alongside the doctors to see the different conditions, resources and challenges faced by the hospital.This was my first exposure to patients with HIV, TB and no access to primary care services.Most patients that I saw were critically unwell which practised my use of emergency and acute medicine as well as treating multiple patients… Show more I had the opportunity work in the Medical Emergency department of Baragwanath Hospital in Johannesburg for my medical elective.Here I worked alongside the doctors to see the different conditions, resources and challenges faced by the hospital.This was my first exposure to patients with HIV, TB and no access to primary care services.Most patients that I saw were critically unwell which practised my use of emergency and acute medicine as well as treating multiple patients simultaneously as a medical student.I was given a lot more responsibility compared to the UK which was a great opportunity to develop my confidence and manage patients.It was certainly an experience that I will carry with me for the rest of my career. Exercise Bushmaster
I had the amazing opportunity to go to the USA as a representative of the British military and take part on Exercise Bushmaster.This is a mock deployment for the final year medical students of the Uniformed Services University. The exercise recreated the tough conditions of being a doctor in a war zone. We were given two weeks as a pre-deployment work up to learn the mission and the relevant medicine followed by a 5 day field exercise working out of a mobile battlefield casualty station… Show more I had the amazing opportunity to go to the USA as a representative of the British military and take part on Exercise Bushmaster.This is a mock deployment for the final year medical students of the Uniformed Services University. It was an amazing opportunity to work with an allied military at such an early stage in my career and I look forward to future deployments alongside my US counterparts. Show less
