Prof. Wilson’s Infectious Disease Genomics group are at the forefront of the development and application of approaches for infectious disease genomics, including genome-wide association studies and expression analyses for understanding the genetic basis of observable differences in important microbiological traits including disease severity and drug resistance. They have several projects generating microbial DNA sequencing data, RNA sequencing data, high performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry data, as well as human genotyping data. These projects are focused on the organisms Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. We are engaged in prospective sampling of microbiological isolates from clinical infections at scale from NHS diagnostic labs in Oxford, with a view to expand this to other sites across the country. I work closely with the wider research team to generate data in the lab, including phenotypic assays in collaboration with the senior postdoctoral researcher within the team, and phenotypically characterise a bank of carriage and infection associated strains for comparative analysis. Additionally, I am pursuing an ambitious sampling study, liaising with clinical microbiological diagnostics labs in Oxford and across the country to create a large library of clinically derived bacteria.

BBSRC funded research titled “Clone Wars in Niche Space: exploring the evolutionary and genetic basis for bacterial species”. Conducted bioinformatics analyses, competition assays, experimental evolution and gene knockout/complementation studies in order to determine how bacterial species remain cohesive over time. MSc in Evolutionary and Behavioural Ecology. Modules in Evolutionary and Behavioural Ecology, Approaches in Evolutionary and Behavioural Ecology, and Statistical Modelling. Research project investigated the effect of industrialisation on life-history traits using a longitudinal and multilevel dataset.

Modules included analysis of biological data, critical thinking and scientific reasoning, and genetics. Final-year project was self-generated and analysed the effect of population size on mutation rate evolution within populations of Pseudomonas fluorescens.

As a leader of a sports team, I was responsible for organising team trips, running training sessions, designing exercise programmes, and leading the team tactically at tournament matches.

I was responsible for analysing and recording the results of antagonistic and mating interactions between common crickets, using a system of letters and numbers to record which individuals won and lost fights, mated and oviposited and at what time they did so. This was done as part of an ongoing study conducted by the University of Exeter in Spain.
