As a proud warrior in defense of civil discourse, I am well-served by my experience in publishing timely information distinguished by accuracy and fairness. The pleasure I derive from a well-written sentence supports a friendly tone that engages readers. In my career, I’ve been fortunate to have worked with organizations and leaders of principle, from the editor who got his start reporting on the civil rights struggle, to the publisher who tacked the yellowed clipping about his own drunk-driving arrest on the newsroom bulletin board, to the journalists whose passion for public service empowered them to do Pulitzer Prize-winning work in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Difficulty did not deter them from doing the right thing, and I am proud to have learned from them.As communications technology has evolved, I have kept pace with the changes. The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C., broke new ground in online journalism during my tenure there, and I was part of the launch team for the online desk at The Times-Picayune in New Orleans. I completed a certificate in marketing and new media through UCLA Extension, and developed a social media, marketing campaign for a state program promoting caregiver respite services. At the same time, I am skilled at writing and editing communications on complex topics in a straightforward manner that cuts to the heart of the issue. Difficulty does not deter me from getting the message across to the target audience in a way that empowers them to take action.
