About Hugh Graham-Marr

Our goal at ABAX is pretty simple - to make English language learning materials for adults that teachers enjoy using and that learners both enjoy learning from AND learn from. No magic bullets. Just a desire to ground our materials in what is known about how people learn language. And in the larger scheme? ... I suppose ABAX works towards a world where more people can talk with one another. And I guess too it could be said that this underlies most of what I've been doing for the past twenty odd years.Update: an ABAX published text, 'Fiction in Action: Whodunit,' has won both HRH the Duke of Edinburgh ESU Book Award for 2010 and the 2011 ELTons Cambridge ESOL International Award for Innovation.Specialties: TESP, TOEIC, ELT Editing, ELT Marketing and Distribution, Event Planning and Promotion, Planning of Promotional Displays, Catalogue Production, Copy-Writing and... the many different skills - many new - demanded within a small but growing ELT publisher (and let me also attest here to considerable experience with trip-ups and stumbles!).

Listed skills include Publishing, Catalogue Production, Editing, Books, and 6 others.

An independent and award-winning publisher of American ELT texts with a world focus, ABAX's two best selling series are Communication Spotlight: Speaking Strategies & Listening Skills and Top-Up Listening. In 2010 we started a new series, a task-based bridge to extensive reading called Fiction in Action, and released the first book in this series, Whodunit. This book has been a milestone text for us in a number of ways. It was, as far as we know, the first ELT text to be released under a creative commons license. It is also our first book to win major international awards—it won the HRH the Duke of Edinburgh ESU Book Award for 2010 and more recently the 2011 ELTons Cambridge ESOL International Award for Innovation. A second book in the series, Spellbound, is scheduled for release in January 2013.In Japan, ABAX imprint texts are promoted by ABAX Ltd, elsewhere by ABAX America. We currently sell into sixteen countries and are licensed into China. In addition to publishing under our own imprint, we have also written and edited two texts for URBest Publishing in Taiwan and four for Berlitz International and have worked with a number of universities to produce school-specific texts based on our own materials. Finally, ABAX Ltd. in addition to promoting ABAX materials also acts as agent in Japan for Helbling Languages, ELB Publishing and for English learning materials produced by the University of Victoria in Canada.
