Hugh Merkel is Head of Clients and the Defined Contribution OCIO Portfolio Management Leader for Mercer’s US Investment Solutions business.Hugh currently leads the US Client Team within Mercer’s US Investment Solutions business which is part of Mercer Wealth. Located in Atlanta he is responsible for the retention of over 300 US clients (including pensions, defined contribution, healthcare, E&F and insurance) and manages a team of consultants and support staff across the US.Hugh directs the DC efforts within Mercer’s Investment Solutions business with a focus on the incorporation and consistency of best thinking among DC OCIO clients including the implementation of custom white label funds, MercerWise, and target date fund mandates. Additionally, Hugh focuses both on solution development of Mercer’s best thinking as well as communicating Mercer’s value to plan sponsors. In addition, Hugh is a contributing member of the portfolio management team, providing input on portfolio oversight and construction. Hugh is specifically focused on a select group of OCIO clients that includes corporate defined benefit and defined contribution plans, healthcare organizations and other institutional pools of assets. Hugh is also the lead consultant on several clients across the United States which use Mercer's investment solutions. This includes clients ranging in size of up to $5bn across a variety of industries.Hugh is a voting member of Mercer’s Defined Contribution Investment Committee, Defined Contribution Discretionary Governance Committee and Target Date Fund Committee. Hugh is also a non-voting member of the Mercer Manager Selection Committee and Equity Strategic Research Team.Before joining Mercer in 2009, Hugh worked as a registered client service associate for Morgan Keegan, where he focused on servicing institutional plan sponsors. Hugh received his BS in sports management from the College of Education and BA in history from the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences at University of Georgia. He is a CFA® charterholder, a CIPM® charterholder and a member of the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of Atlanta.
