About Hugo Cantu
Hugo E. Cantu was elected to the Alumni Board in June 2020 for a two-year term. He graduated in May 2020 with a B.A. in Public Policy and a minor in Real Estate Development, making Hugo the first President of the SPP Alumni board to graduate from the undergraduate program. He is a member of the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI), Engagement, and Steering Committee. Hugo also holds an Associate Degree in Business Administration from Montgomery College. In his time at the University of Maryland, Hugo has served as a Public Policy Ambassador, an Orientation Advisor, and an Executive Board member and co-founder of UMD’s Public Policy Professional Fraternity, Kappa Omega Alpha. He served on the Presidential Transfer Committee for President Darryl Pines as a member of the University Relations and Communications, and Alumni Association subcommittee. Hugo has worked in the Montgomery County Council and Prince George’s County Council. In his free time, Hugo enjoys cooking, reading, and watching sports.My experience in government, coupled with a drive to make a difference, will further the vision for any institution or principal I have the privilege to serve. While my professional experiences have been focused on campaign management, legislative drafting and strategic policy advice outside of technology, I have developed a passionate interest in artificial intelligence. My experiences have allowed me to build effective relationships and drive for results such as new property tax credits for disabled veterans, reduced plastic pollution, expanded electric vehicle infrastructure, the creation of public financing for political candidates and new building design requirements for multigenerational living spaces. I can learn new topics quickly and thoroughly by engaging with stakeholders, coordinating initiatives between the private, public, and nonprofit sectors, all of which has sharpened my written, analytical, and oral skillset.As an alumnus of the University of Maryland, I am inspired by my alma mater’s mantra to “Do Good” when approaching our big problems. In my time on the UMD Alumni Association’s Board of Governors, I spearheaded partnerships with other members of the board to initiate panel discussions on the impacts of AI in public policy focusing on the proper protections of privacy, combating racial biases, and preparing for a world in which AI far outpaces the legislative process.
