At my current occupation, my primary duties are running residual solvent, microbial, active water, and moisture content analysis. Every morning, I review the sequence on the GCMS from the previous day to confirm it ran smoothly and inspect chromatograms for any qualitative or quantitative errors. Peak shape, appropriate integrations, qualifier ratios, retention times, method blanks, matrix duplicates, and standard recoveries are areas I examine to ensure the residual solvent data complies with quality control criteria. For microbial analysis, I go over the control samples to make sure amplification occurred correctly and then examine amplification of cannabis samples. Near the end of the day, I will review my colleagues bench sheets and instrument sequences to find any errors they may have missed. If errors are found, I interview them to gather information on the matter.

At the lab I was mainly responsible for the preparation, extraction, and analysis of environmental samples. I operated and maintained a gas chromatography mass spectrometer (GCMS) using high-resolution techniques to analyze pollutants. For all procedures, I applied strict documentation practices to provide accurate and precise details for final reports. To ensure analysis met federal and state regulations, I reviewed calibration checks, instrumentation standards, and quality control samples done by myself and colleagues. Whenever Environmental Protection Agency methods were updated, I experimented with our standard operating procedures (SOP) to guide final edits with valuable data. I also trained new chemists and provided expertise to new hires, project managers, nontechnical staff, and laboratory directors to keep samples moving forward to report completion.
