Hugo Sanchez Hernandez, Ph.D. Email and Phone Number
I am a psychologist and affective scientist with nearly a decade of research experience. I graduated with my doctoral degree from the University of California, Irvine, where my work focused on understanding how emotions are managed across social hierarchies. Specifically, I studied how upward social mobility, the transition from worlds of lower socioeconomic status to worlds of higher socioeconomic status, shapes the emotion experience of individuals from underrepresented and underserved backgrounds (e.g., first-generation college students).Over the years, my research has spanned the fields of affective science, social psychology, and health. I have examined a variety of topics, including the interplay of emotion and health outcomes among vulnerable populations (e.g., low-income and ethnic minority women, military spouses of deployed partners) and the different facets of interpersonal emotion regulation and emotion expression that shape our everyday life, such as how individuals monitor and navigate their emotional states across their social interactions and interpersonal relationships as well as the consequences of expressing certain emotions (e.g., pride) in specific social contexts. I am committed to using both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, and support mixed-methods research designs as the appropriate approach to generating novel findings focused on underrepresented and underserved communities. Along with my research experience, I also have extensive experience mentoring college students from underrepresented communities. In my mentoring I always aim to be responsive and sensitive to individuals' diverse experiences. Through both my research and mentorship, I hope to open doors that can allow these underrepresented and diverse communities to thrive.Outside of academia and psychology, I also have previous experience as a screenwriter and have a passion for film. In the future, I hope to merge my affection and knowledge of film with my expertise on psychological research.
