About Hugo Pinto

I am a Portuguese Biochemist with a Master in Biochemistry from the Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto (Portugal) and a PhD in Genetic and Biomolecular Science from the University of Pavia (Italy). After having lived and worked in several places in Europe (Portugal, The Netherlands and Italy) I am currently a Postdoc in the Art Skoultchi’s lab at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in NY studying the role of Histone H1 in chromatin organization and function. As an individual, because of my analytical and inquisitive nature I consider myself a scientist first. I have developed however a multitude of interests that span different fields of life. I have a profound interest in the financial markets and I perform due diligence, trade and invest securities and derivatives of early-stage biotech and pharmaceutical companies, I find this the best of both worlds as I can combine my scientific background to the financial markets (update: my attention these days focus in commodities namely and mostly the uranium space. The debate around alternative and clean energy sources has for too long neglected nuclear as an alternative. It’s due for a spectacular comeback as it is by far the cleanest and cheapest energy source capable to satisfy the growing demand for energy. The current situation of deficit in production compared to current and projected demand, together with the time that takes to bring new production online makes it a no brainer in terms of investment opportunity. One might say a once in a life time opportunity). I have also a deep interest for international affairs and world politics and policies. I am an avid debater and engage in topics as broad as philosophy, ethics, policy, politics, economy, science, morals and others. A fair warning... I am known to play the devil's advocate and like passionate and intense debates!I am also a lover of History with special focus in european (ancient, middle age and modern) and mesopotanean History.

Regenerative medicine holds great promise for replacing or regenerating damaged tissues or organs. Embryonic stem cells (ESC) and induced pluripotent stem cells (IPS) have the potential to differentiate into all the cell types of an adult and thus have great potential for replacement cells in disease. I am particularly interested in the binary choice cells need to make: namely, the decision to attain pluripotency versus one to differentiate. Understanding the mechanisms of lineage specification is imperative to utilize the unlimited potential of stem cells. For that purpose, my work in the Donohoe lab has consisted in the identification of novel genes and regulatory regions targeted by the transcriptional circuitry of early stem cell lineages as well as the role of long non-coding RNAs in specification and maintenance of cell identity.
  • Consiglio Nazionale Delle Ricerche
    Early Stage Researcher
Consiglio Nazionale Delle Ricerche Apr 2005 - Dec 2009
    Pavia Area, Italy
April 2005 to December 2009, worked in the Department of Genetics and Human Genomics, IGM-CNR (Pavia, Italy) as an Early Stage Researcher funded by the European Community in the context of the Human Resources and Mobility Activity, Marie Curie Actions (contract MRTN- CT-2003-503618). In November 2005, I initiated my PhD in Genetic and Biomolecular Sciences at the University of Pavia. The PhD project was aimed at characterizing and understand the regulation of the general transcription factor TFIIE during the assemblage of the preinitiation complex in RNA polymerase II transcription.
  • Center For Biochemistry And Lipid Enzymology
    Erasmus Fellow
Center For Biochemistry And Lipid Enzymology Mar 2004 - Sep 2004
    Utrecht Area, Netherlands
March 2004 to September 2004, worked in Department of Biochemistry of Lipids at the Center for Biochemistry and Lipid Enzymology (Utrecht University, The Netherlands) under the orientation of Professor Karel Wirtz, while doing the graduate degree thesis project entitled “PITPβ expression in differentiating HL-60 cells and its regulation by TNF-α”. In this project, the expression and regulation of PITPβ was analysed during the differentiation of HL-60 cells towards a neutrophil-like phenotype and its relevance for neutrophil survival.
