My passion is to solve furnace design problems through the development and implementation of innovative solutions to increase the campaign life of key equipment, improve its safe operation, and reduce downtime. My experience range from being a hands-on smelter plant engineer, a furnace OEM design and technical support engineer for numerous international smelters, to being a marketing executive and an engineering manager with prominent smelting technology companies. Key achievements include:• Developed a patented copper launder system for slag and matte transport, reducing explosion risk and increasing campaign life up to 3 years. It was implemented on numerous international smelting plants producing copper, cobalt, nickel and platinum.• Developed, evaluated and re-designed tapholes for clients across industries from platinum, copper and nickel to ferroalloys and pig iron producers. The focus was on improved safety, improved maintenance access and reduced down time. • Managed a major feasibility study for a FeCr submerged arc furnace upgrade resulting in a successful project based on a fixed price for engineering, project and construction management, limiting client's exposure to budget overrun. Maintained excellent client relationship throughout and subsequent to the project.

Responsible for furnace equipment design and design evaluation using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Key achievements include:• Developed, designed and marketed a high intensity sidewall copper cooling system. The system was customised and implemented on various furnace types, including electrical slag cleaning and settling furnaces, and top submerged lance converting furnaces. It resulted in increased campaign lives whilst allowing process design to focus on recovery and throughput. • Assisted 3 clients producing FeCr, FeMn and Cobalt to improve their off-gas cooling and cleaning equipment. Activities included the review and optimisation of bag filter, trombone (radiative) cooler and duct designs, as well as fan selection.• Performed Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) work to evaluate, improve and develop designs ranging from Söderberg electrode baking profile analysis, electrode column components, slag granulation and dewatering systems to off-gas duct and furnace roof design among others.

Plant Engineer

Responsible for plant development and capital project implementation on the blast furnace iron making plant (4 blast furnaces and ancillary equipment). Key achievements include:• Investigated, redesigned and implemented a modified cooling water filter system for a 10,000 tpd blast furnace, reducing pressure loss and increasing water supply by 20% to over 5000 m3/h at a minimal cost.• Worked as project engineer on two large blast furnace reline projects with a combined value of $90 million (adjusted value to 2014). Specific responsibilities included redesign and refurbishment of an extensive furnace sidewall cooling system, refurbishment of a furnace bell-less top feed system, and procurement and installation of a new venturi scrubber system.• Investigated, identified and resolved issues preventing the operation of a newly installed slag granulation system. Managed multi-discipline team and OEM to implement successful solution.
