Founded in 1941, Humane Indiana began as a small, caring group of animal-lovers called Humane Society Hammond Area. It soon grew into a facility in Hammond before relocating to our current shelter location in Munster, Indiana. The move required a name change and soon became Humane Society Calumet Area. In 2003, the organization opened Paws Resale Shoppe, the result of the community’s generosity with donated  home goods items to support our mission to help the animals.In 2014, an opportunity to care for orphaned and injured wildlife became available at the former Moraine Ridge Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Valparaiso, IN.  The added wildlife entity called for a revision of our mission statement to what it is today: To lead the community in the humane treatment of all animals.In an effort to represent all entities, in the name of servicing domestic and wildlife animals and intake from more than 20 Indiana counties, our name was changed to Humane Indiana in 2017, and our PAWS Resale Shoppe was renamed Humane Indiana Resale.Humane Indiana is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization and while we are not affiliated with Humane Society or Humane Society US, we do recognize and share some of their best animal welfare practices.OUR MISSIONTo lead the community in the humane treatment of all animals.
