The goals of my research project were 1) to analyze the mechanics of a fractured tibia treated with internal fixation, and 2) to develop an internal orthopedic strain sensor capable of monitoring bone healing and improving the capabilities of standard x-ray assessment by physicians. My role in meeting these goals involved:• Developing a series of finite element models to analyze the mechanical response of lower extremities and new orthopedic implants to clinically relevant loads.• Developing CAD models of orthopedic implants for computational analysis.• Designing and developing an optical strain sensor for orthopedic plates to better evaluate fracture healing.• Collaborating with members of a multi-disciplinary team with backgrounds in chemistry, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering.• Utilizing 3D printing to create rapid prototypes of orthopedic strain sensor designs.• Producing technical drawings of prototypes for precision machining.• Performing mechanical testing in the evaluation of prototype designs.Total research experience (including unpaid): 2 years

• Assisted professors in grading of assignments for undergraduate engineering students.• Provided feedback and guidance to students on engineering coursework.• Proctored undergraduate exams.• Performed data analysis of student performance over time to identify students in need of additional support.• Communicated suggestions, issues, and feedback to professors.

I worked on a multi-disciplinary team consisting of engineers from both design and manufacturing in the development of a new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) platform for GE Healthcare. I used finite element analysis in Ansys and solid modelling with Pro/E for structural analysis of MRI components. I also performed tooling design for improved fixation during welding processes and vibration testing of existing MRI models. I contributed to design projects from initial conception to prototype development and testing.
