I am an applied microbiologist who has worked in the pharmaceutical, agriculture and food, biocatalysis, and environmental arenas. I am considered a hybrid leader and scientist given that I have 22 years in the pharma/biotech arena, five years with the Department of Energy and 13 years in academia and 3 years of international work. I have served as a senior leader in both for profit and non-profit organizations. I have also been a team member in moving concepts and ideas from the bench to the bank. Since my experience and skills are very diverse in many areas, I practice integration of disciplines and thinking at where circles intersect to advance science and technology. Since I was also in the public sector serving as the Acting Secretary of Higher Education for the State of Maryland and Science Advisor to the Secretary of the Environment, as well as being a public university president, I am very aware of how important policy and regulatory issues are with respect to moving the life sciences and technologies forward. I have served on various Federal and State committees and industry boards. I have vast experience in moving ideas from the bench to development, manufacturing and out to the public for use. For the past two years I served as the Interim Provost at Mount Saint Mary's University, a small Catholic liberal education university. My role was to be a game changer and the faculty and I were successful in bringing new majors and technology centers to the campus. I am now back to consulting full time for universities, industry and the U.S. Government.
