Ask a hardcore mountain biker, and they'll tell you that Bellingham has some of the best terrain in the lower 48. A large network of the most challenging trails begins 300 yards from my front door, but the access point has no room for cars. Riders must park at the bottom of Southern Ct. (which ascends 400 feet in 0.4 miles for a near-20% gradient, the steepest pavement in the county). It's not unusual in the summer to see a dozen riders per day grimly chugging up the hill. The thought occurred: I work from home and drive a 7-seat minivan, with rack space for 6 bikes... this could be a win-win side business. After securing permission from Sudden Valley, I put up a sign in the parking area. Riders scanned the QR code to a Notion page with my embedded work calendar, liability waiver, and a brief form to send me a push notification ("[Name] requesting shuttle for [party size]").That was the idea, anyway. The network was unsanctioned and independently built, but there was an understanding between the riding community and county land authority that it could operate as such while official plans were pending. I hadn't known that shortly before I moved back to the area, relations had frayed to the point of the county decommissioning half the trails. Several local riders eventually contacted me to express that while they appreciated the thought, if I truly had the community's best interests at heart I should take down the sign and discontinue the shuttle. Which, of course, I did.

I served a second year through AmeriCorps as a teacher with Tiny Trees Outdoor Preschool. In our forest classroom at Seahurst Park, my team of 3 worked with 30+ kids ages 3-6 over the course of the week - in my teammate's words, "helping them learn how to human."

I served a year through AmeriCorps teaching music, theater, and chess in the public schools of Condon, Oregon (pop. 687 per the 2010 census). The only music teacher in town, I was solely responsible for developing and implementing the music/theater curriculum for 110 K-8 students. Additionally, I provided after-school private lessons free of charge to over 50 students in 7 different instruments.Major projects included:• Directed two hourlong end-of-semester concerts, interwoven with fully staged plays.• Founded & coached an after-school chess club• Wrote & secured $1,000 grant from the Gilliam County Cultural Coalition to repair the school's stock of brass & reed instruments

During my month-long internship at this remote music retreat for adults, I digitized 40+ years' worth of lead sheets (>1200 total – link below) into an organized online database. For anyone interested in duplicating the process, steps included 1) borrowing somebody's hair dryer to detach the magnet mount from my car dash, 2) C-clamping said mount to a 2x4, 3) setting my phone up as an automatic scanner, 4) flipping umpteen-thousands of pages as it captured and automatically uploaded the charts to the cloud. Plus, y'know, some techy stuff.

I've always valued and enjoyed working with my hands outside, and I found opportunities consistently as a farmhand, handyman, and painter during summers and school breaks.
