In my first year of university at StFX, I worked tirelessly on a business plan for the environmentally sustainable luxury vacation rental business I dreamt of starting on Grand Manan Island. I completed a thorough business plan and submitted it for funding. I named the company Park Place Retreats and incorporated it in 2021. After three months, I had built my first unit, a geodome. I established operations and welcomed guests before heading back to StFX for my second semester. I trained employees, automated digital tasks like CRM, and created a customer acquisition and engagement strategy.Running my own business has allowed me to gain work experience in a business's functional aspects. I am the marketing manager, bookkeeper, human resources manager, and strategist for Park Place Retreats. I also enjoy working hands-on with the company on Grand Manan Island. Overcoming obstacles associated with running an accommodation business during a pandemic required me to be adaptable. Since opening in 2021, Park Place Retreats has maintained over a 90% occupancy rate year-round. It has generated 151 online reviews from verified Airbnb customers, with an average review of 4.99 out of 5 stars, as well as a five star rating from 113 reviews on Google. The company has donated thousands of dollars to environmental and LGBTQ+ charities, and is a member of 1% for the planet. The experience I have gained from creating Park Place Retreats has been invaluable, and I am so thankful to have built it to where it is today.

Trapped is a lifestyle brand and tourist destination on Grand Manan Island. I have had the pleasure of serving customers at their licensed deck which serves alcoholic beverages and seafood. Here, I get to educate customers on our small fishing community and embody the Trapped brand. It's where we live - "Trapped" on an isolated island accessible only by ferry; It's what we do - referring to the fishing industry catching lobster with "traps".
