Profile bio

About Inhong Hwang

In the pursuit of my Ph.D., I have developed new approaches to treating cancer. Specifically, I have studied synthetic ion transporters for manipulation of the normal ion balance across cell membranes to induce cancer cell death. As part of this research, I synthesized macrocyclic compounds for the mechanistic study of how synthetic anion transporters affect apoptosis and autophagy. Furthermore, a set of artificial ion pair receptors that act as efficient Na+/K+ exchangers in liposomal models was prepared. They mediate Na+ influx and promote K+ efflux in cancer cells. Mechanistic studies revealed that these cation exchangers induce endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in cancer cells by perturbing intracellular cation homeostasis, promoting the generation of reactive oxygen species, and eventually enhancing mitochondria-mediated apoptosis.During my master’s program, I participated in a wide range of projects related to the development of multifunctional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for CO2 sorption, heterogeneous catalysis, and photoluminescence, as well as selective chemosensors for the detection of metal ions.
