The Foundation’s mission is to preserve Historic Battersea and offer educational, artistic and cultural experiences that inform, enrich and inspire the public.Battersea is a Virginia Historic Landmark listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the finest surviving examples of Palladian architecture in America. Modeled after the architectural designs of Italian Andrea Palladio, Battersea's characteristic five-part symmetrical layout subscribes to neo-Palladian and Federal styles that were popular during the 18th and early 19th centuries. The Foundation purchased the current 37 acres and manor house from the City of Petersburg in 2010 focusing on stabilizing and renovating the manor in the subsequent years. Additionally, it has hosted historical, educational, and entertainment programs that it is now aggressively marketing with the near completed renovation.

What makes a successful nonprofit organization? Why do some succeed in achieving their missions while so many others struggle to survive? Anyone who has served a nonprofit organization in a senior staff or volunteer leadership capacity appreciates that the management challenges are daunting. While there can be many underlying reasons, the fact is that almost every nonprofit operates with severely limited resources and has virtually no margin for error. As a result, the tolerance for risk-taking is minimal, and opportunity costs multiply.The successful non-profit organization is one that understands the complex mosaic of mission, tradition, leadership, sound management, public acceptance, and resources that must form the basis for success. A shortcoming in any of these will inevitably challenge organizational health and viability.

Assisted the director with all functions of the Memorial. Primary duties included evaluating programs and services, expanding outreach to outside organizations, reviewing and updating the strategic plan, and reviewing performance measures assessing outcomes and productivity.

Managed business development and fundraising for the operations, programs and a successful capital campaign for the Virginia War Memorial, a state agency. • Efforts secured $7.5 million from the Commonwealth of Virginia and $2.5 million from the private sector to construct an 18,000 square foot Education Center. • Led strategic growth and expansion of organization resulting in a tenfold budget increase with an additional $1 million raised. • Managed completion of a five-year strategic plan producing the organization’s first comprehensive plan for governance, management, marketing, and program culminating with $5 million endowment campaign.

Created and managed a comprehensive fundraising program for this start-up museum, raising $15.25 million, exceeding the goal. • Provided guidance and support to all staff and volunteers in fund raising activities at both the strategic and operational levels. • Developed the national and local prospect pool and implemented the systems to manage the cultivation, solicitation, and administration of these prospects. • Served on the management team guiding organizational operations.

1989-1997, 2000-2002: Entered Dominion Bank’s (now Wells Fargo Bank), a $12 billion bank holding company, management training program in 1989 with increasing responsibility in the commercial real estate and special assets departments until 1993. From 1993 to 1997 was Vice President of Regency Bank (now BB&T Bank) managing a third of its loan and deposit portfolio of $72 million and from 2000 to 2002 Vice President of First Virginia Bank - Colonial (now BB&T) developing new business and servicing a loan portfolio of $30 million and a deposit portfolio for the $900 million local bank, part of the $11 billion holding company.

Assisted nonprofit organizations with multiple funding needs. In addition to planning and executing specific fund raising campaigns, ranging from several thousand to several million dollars, services included strategic planning, board development, and financial planning. Fund raising efforts helped clients, consisting of schools, museums, religious organizations, and human service agencies, raise approximately $6 million in unrestricted and capital donations.

Served as a commissioned officer in the United States Army as an AH-1 Cobra pilot, attack helicopter platoon leader, and as division air officer in the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). Awarded the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal. Honorably discharged as a Captain.
