The Math Learning Center at Michigan Tech is an on-campus resource where student coaches help students achieve success in their math classes by working through homework problems, practicing new concepts and reviewing topics for their exams. As Hiring and Communications Executive Coach I co-managed our staff of 30+ coaches with two other Executive Coaches and our faculty director. My responsibilities included managing communications with our staff and the students who used the center as well as producing posters and other advertising materials to publicize the center. As executive coaches we cooperated to ensure that our coaching staff had the knowledge and tools available to provide each of their students with a great tutoring experience.I also organized and scheduled our hiring process for new coaches during which we interviewed 50+ candidates and eventually extended offers to 20. Our interview process involves a written application, an in-person interview, a basic math skills assessment and a practical tryout experience that presents the candidates with an opportunity to demonstrate their teaching and social skills. I collaborated with my co-executives, our director and our two executives-in-training to select applicants to move on at each stage.

During my time as a coach, I tutored students in Precalculus, Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, and Statistics. I communicated complex mathematical concepts clearly to students with widely varying skill levels and math backgrounds. This required me to adapt quickly to various learning styles and adjust explanations accordingly. I tutored both in one-on-one weekly appointments and during walk-in hours. I worked at least 10 hours most weeks while also balancing a full course load. When I worked walk-in shifts, it was important for me to manage time effectively to ensure the many students who came in for walk-in hours each received adequate attention. Students came in for a wide range of classes and I was not able to spend long with any one student, so I had to quickly gain a deep understanding of each problem and come up with a solution. Then, I determined which concepts were needed to solve the problem and tried to find the best way to explain them to the student in a way that they could understand.For my weekly appointments, I carefully chose sample problems to illustrate key concepts and review necessary prerequisite knowledge. I had to continuously evaluate my students' level of understanding as I taught so that I could speed up or back-track accordingly. I had around 8 students a semester I saw for weekly appointments - some for multiple semesters as they progressed through their math curriculum.

During my semester as a Math Lab consultant I assisted students in the process of debugging Mathematica code and graded Calculus I-III Mathematica labs.

I led a team of 18 first-year computer science students through orientation and team building activities. We had one week of training followed by a week of orientation events with our students. As part of this position I acted as a role model and source of information for my team during orientation week and throughout the year.

As a Business Intelligence Intern I collaborated with two other interns to gather and evaluate data sets. I built a data pre-processing tool in R to help my teammates import data for use in models. I also constructed a flexible tool for explanatory data set analysis that helped us select data sets for use in mathematical models.Our goal was to forecast metrics at a supply chain center level using ARIMA modeling techniques to provide more granular forecasts to the supply chain team. Once the model was constructed I evaluated the model's weekly performance to highlight opportunities for future improvement.We worked together to build a presentation that explained our methodology and results clearly and concisely. We shared this presentation with the supply chain and finance teams as well as our CFO. When I returned to start my full time position, a version of the models we built was still in use.

Dematic is a warehouse logistics company that supplies technologies to streamline and automate materials handling processes. While interning at Dematic I worked independently to update a file transfer Windows Service and convert it from C++ to C#. In addition to updating the code base, I also built a visual interface for configuring the file transfer service using C# and Visual Studio. My other project for the summer was collaborating with two software engineers to upgrade site software for a current customer. The upgrade involved merging together the contents and functionality of five servers so that the software could be run on three virtual machines. I ran tests on the updated software to ensure that the software worked as designed after it was moved to the new virtual machines. In addition, I traveled to Crawfordsville, IN and Westminster, MD with the upgrade team to commission the project and verify its operation on-site. While at these locations I interacted directly with the customer to answer questions and coordinate commissioning efforts.
