Currently, a Full Professor in Biomedical Engineering and Head of Department of Biomaterials & Biomedical Technology at The University Medical Center Groningen/University of Groningen, The Netherlands. Former Full Prof. in Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology, at the University of Helsinki, Finland. Also, currently a Group Leader/Research Director and the Head of the Nanomedicines and Biomedical Engineering Group, , Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Helsinki. Dr. Santos' research is focused on nano-biomaterials, e.g. nanoporous silica/silicon, liposomes, solid lipids and microfluidics for controlled drug delivery, diagnostics and cancer therapy. He has more than 300 refereed articles (h-index = 67; >13000 citations) and more than 250 conference proceedings/abstracts. He has supervised >50-MSc students, >20 post-docs and >30-PhDs, and he is currently the supervisor/co-supervisor of >12-PhD students, >7 post-docs, and >4 undergraduates. He has also given >120 invited/selected talks in national/international meetings. In 2010, he received the "Talent Prize in Science" awarded by the Portuguese Government, in 2013 the ERC starting grant, in 2013 and 2014 he received the Young Researcher Award 2013 and was distinguished by the exceptional scientific productivity, respectively, by the Faculty of Pharmacy (University of Helsinki), and in 2016 he received the Academy of Finland Award for Social Impact. He is an active referee for ca. >101 international journals and several research project foundations.
