Geographers are multi-disciplinary. We tend to know a little about a lot, rather than a lot about a little. This is our superpower. It allows us to see links that others cannot. It has allowed me to consult to the UN, all levels of the Australian government, to be a science broadcaster, and to teach over 12,000 physical and social geography students online.At my core, I am concerned for the future of our earth, and for the people living there. Especially the young people who will inherit it. Young people trying to get their start in the workforce are having a tough time. Looking for a job is not that much different to a small business pitching to a major client. Cold approaches with a brief cover letter and an unfocussed one-size-fits-all resume are destined to fail. As the go to person in my circle, I see this problem in too many of the job applications I help with. It’s frustrating!You can be lucky with getting a job, but you can also make your own luck by taking a step back and playing the long game. College students will fare better if they work on building a micro personal brand. That involves researching an industry and its players, reflecting that research in their LinkedIn profile, informational interviewing, and building relationships. Such a brand needs to be just big enough to convey a job seeker’s confidence that they're qualified for the job they're applying for. It will improve their chances of writing a laser focussed resume that addresses all the criteria in a job description, and then some! And, with any luck, relationships they’ve built will mean they’re applying for jobs in workplaces where they’re already know. These days I’ve just finished writing my first book. You guessed it. It’s my slant on early career job seeking. I do not have a background in recruiting or HR. But, I do remember the angst I felt when I was looking for my first job. I have been on the receiving end of many applications for internships. I have helped many people get jobs.
