The Auxiliary is the uniformed civilian branch of the service and assist the Coast Guard by promoting recreational boating safety through vessel inspections; safety checks; waterway patrols; and boat safety classes. The Auxiliary also augments the active duty Coast Guard in nearly all of its missions, from environmental protection to search-and-rescue to disaster relief.

From late May-to-mid-June, 2014, I served as an anti-corruption advisor with the USAID/Tetra Tech/DPK Rule of Law Stabilization-Formal project, in Kabul, Afghanistan.My work focused on the nation's Anti-Corruption Tribunals and the adoption of best practices recommended in a recent evaluation of that institution. I developed a plan for the judges of the tribunals to participate in continuing legal education; for less-experienced judges to be mentored by more senior jurists; for periodic reviews of developments in criminal procedure and of substantive changes in the law; and for seminars and workshops dealing with complex cases and the manner in which they are investigated and proven.The plan also provides for the training of a group of judges as judicial instructors and that the role of international personnel be limited to assistance with production and logistics. These provisions are intended to enhance the sustainability of the plan as well as to conserve scarce resources during this time of transition in Afghanistan.

After my return to the United States at the conclusion of 7 years service in international development abroad, I joined the Pinal County Attorney's Office. I served as a trial lawyer and also handled Petitions for Post-Conviction Relief as well as Writs submitted to the State's higher courts (called Special Actions in Arizona). In addition, I carried an interesting and varied caseload in the Justice Courts of Pinal County. I was able to refresh my legal skills and, I think, make a positive contribution to the well-being of the citizens of Pinal County and Central Arizona.

I was just out of law school, and within a few months of starting work, I was prosecuting the most serious sorts of crimes committed against persons, such as sexual assault, child abuse, and homicide. I was also active in the establishment of victims' rights groups; taught at the Allegheny County Police Academy; and tried well over 200 cases to verdicts in front of juries.
